Roomies
For the past five days or so Izzy and Evie have been roomies... Genevieve has decided that she wants to sleep in the same room as Izzy and we have told her that so long as there is not excessive waking o' the each other going on that we were OK with the room share situation. Now I wonder though, as I sit in the living room and look at the vast array of disaster that Evie has left in her playing wake, if it isn't so much about wanting to be close to her little sister or a fear of what she claims are strange noises in her room but actually a secret plot to take over yet another room in our house. I went in there this afternoon to change Izzy's diaper and found about a 1/2 dozen dolls, and a bunch of Evie's clothes in Izzy's drawers... Hmm maybe not even so secret of a plot. The room sharing has its benefits though, Patrick and I get a whole side of the house to ourselves (no extra bathroom light on needed) and Izzy has someone to sush her when she wakes up at night and maybe, just maybe, if this whole two to a room thing works out Patrick and I will get an office again.... you may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one :) (Oh and try as I might all afternoon to get a nice sisterly shot of the two roomies together I was thwarted at every turn so this will just have to be an imagine it yourself post)

Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day! I've had a pretty darn good one so far. Evie made me a plethora of presents:
Each of which was individually wrapped :) Then Patrick, Evie and Izzy took me out to my favorite french food breakfast place and this time I did not have a mimosa spilled on me. (Last time we went there, when Nicole was in town, I was decidedly doused and rather sticky). I then went out shopping for a fancy dress with Genevieve for a gala dinner event that Patrick and I are going to next Friday. I actually bought two dresses because they were both super deals and I couldn't decide. After a three hour shopping excursion Evie and I came back and did a fashion show for Patrick and Izzy of our fabulous purchases. Nothing like a little girlie fun to celebrate mother's day! Hmm now all I need to make the day perfect is a nap....

Isadora at 10 months
Isadora at 10 months old is a very active little girl. Her favorite foods are shredded cheese, egg and lettuce. She almost has three teeth (one is in and the other two are just poking through) and is able to stand on her own for a brief period of time. Just last night she attempted to walk on her own and made it about 2 steps before she tumbled into my arms. I don't think it quite counts as first steps though because it was more like the inertia of her weight pulling her forward then real walking. One of her favorite toys is her whoozit, she particularly likes to chew on his nose and make it squeak. She is exceedingly fond of water and will make a b-line to the bathroom whenever she hears the water on, and protest very, very loudly if she is not allowed to join you in your watery adventure. She is also exceedingly fond her sister, and wants to be wherever she is at all times, which of course is complicated when Genevieve is out front playing before dinner or in her room (aka pit of chokables.) She knows well how to get your attention, unfortunately this is by screetching, very loudly, until you understand what she wants. Given that she cannot speak yet this can be a painful experience for all involved. She has uttered a mama here and there and definitely knows who her dada is. She sleeps pretty well most nights and will sometimes take a nap in her own crib, otherwise the default is a nap on your back in the ergo. She takes a two hour nap in the morning and about a 45 minute one in the afternoon (the exact opposite of what Evie did at this age....) Above all she is still a warm and happy little person.

Such a perfect day (well late afternoon)
I write this to preserve the moment for posterity... and to revisit on those days that are utter chaos peppered with not just a little bit of hair-tearing frustration not to mention utter exhaustion. This afternoon was as near perfect a mommy/daughters routine afternoon as one could ever hope for. I picked Evie up at school at 3:45. She came running up to me excited to tell me just how much fun she had at school today and that the highlight of her day was decidedly me coming to the class to talk about water. She then gave me a great explanation of what evaporation is (clearly my idea of ideal afternoon does involve a fair amount of geek). We then drove to pick up Izzy with minimal complaining of hunger (even perfect is not without a bit of concern for the 5 year old stomach post a long day at school). Upon coming into Borelys house Izzy greets me with a big smile and squeal and proceeds to book it to my feet to be picked up. (She almost immediately wants back down again but that is to be expected at this point) As we leave, without prompting, Izzy starts to wave bye-bye and Evie heads out the door with me the first (not 20th) time I ask her to.
We drive to the grocery store with both girls in the back making funny raspberry noises at each other and giggling. When we get to the store Evie runs in to get her kid cart and meets Izzy and I as we go along collecting the weeks groceries. Evie comes and goes periodically to get a sample of this or find a "treat" to bring home. Izzy just goes along for the ride, commenting on the whole grocery scene and smiling her intoxicating smile at just about everyone. Genevieve helps unload the cart at checkout and Izzy contentedly sits while the groceries are checked out and paid for. Then Evie hops onto the cart in front of me like she always does so that the "hot lava" of the asphalt outside won't melt her shoes (and I can easily get a baby and a cart and a 5 year old to the car). Evie walks along the white line of our parking spot so as not to "melt" her shoes and casually asks me how it is that I always have hot lava proof shoes on when we buy groceries. I load the car and then open my bubbly water, which proceeds to spray all over me but hey its hot so it actually feels pretty good and Evie reminds me that its just water and "no worries mommy it will evaporate in the hot car" (oh the joy!)
We arrive home and Izzy happily goes into her high chair and munches on shredded cheese while Evie puts together everything she needs for a good stint of pretend around the palm tree in the front yard. Evie plays and Izzy eats, each checking in occasionally, Izzy with a blaah...blaaah blat when she needs more cheese or puffs and Evie when she just has to tell me about the next fabulous thing her dolls were going to do. They both went on like this, perfectly content, for the entire time it took me to put away the groceries and make a simple dinner. Oh and the both tolerated me listening to the Rolling Stones while I did it. Ahh the simple pleasures in a normal day!

Birthday weekend!
Genevieve had quite the 5th birthday experience. Friday, her actual birthday the whole family was home and we started the day with waffles and presents. Patrick got her a new ballet outfit and a much loved "diamond" ballerina necklace and I got her a dress up fairy costume with a matching doll and book about fairies. We spend a good part of the day getting ready for Mimi to come to town and the big party. That night we had dinner, cake and more presents that night at my parent's house.
I tried my hand at making a fabulous bunny cake but failed miserably so I did an emergency trip to whole foods and managed to get a much more attractive cake.... somewhere deep inside me is a pastry maker just waiting to come out, I just know it....
Anyway, we were all exhausted so we thought we'd go out for sushi too :) Whew all in all it was a great but tiring weekend!!
Presents at Mina and Papas (the dress is her fairy dress from me... she wore it all day the next day too)
Although not mentioned much here... Izzy did enjoy the festivities as well.
Saturday I took her to ballet and by the time she had her tap shoes on Mimi was there with Patrick (and Izzy). We went out to a french brunch (where I was the recipient of a mimosa spillage incident... mmmm nothing quite like champagne and oj in your hair) and then later in the afternoon Patrick took the girls and his mom to the Pascua Yaqui Easter celebration and then San Xavier del Bac.
Yesterday was the big party day and included a jumping castle, 12 friends and a big Easter egg hunt. Izzy tried her hand at both the castle and using a push toy... both were achieved with marginal success.
Looking for eggs.... Evie just went out back to look for more.... she is convinced that some were missed.

Happy Birthday Genevieve!
Whew we had quite the birthday weekend! More on that in a bit, but first the annual interview with Genevieve:
Age - 5 years
Best Friend - Nanan (it should be noted though that she calls many friends "best friend"...)
Favorite Foods - Bananas and sweet potatoes
Favorite Dinner - Vietnamese noodle salad
What she wants to be when she grows up - Babysitter
Favorite Color - Red and Pink (apparently she couldn't decided between the two)
Favorite Song - all the songs in Marry Poppins
Favorite Movie - Marry Poppins (given the previous answer this should be no surprise)
Favorite Book - Queen Clarion's Secret (I just bought this for her for her birthday... we actually haven't read it yet but obviously she is pretty excited about it...)
Favorite Activity at School - drawing pictures, arts and crafts, and work (!)
Favorite TV Show - Barney
Activities - Ballet, tap, piano and choir
Year 4 to 5 big events: trip to Disneyland, multiple trips to DC, started playing/pretending by herself all the time, can write whole name and any other word so long as you sound it out, started drawing really cool (well cool to her parents at least) pictures...often with elaborate stories, got her own fish (which is still alive), named herself Rolling Stone, went to the hospital for a whole week and (of course) became a big sister... and on that note....
Most important thing about being a big sister - "Feeding my sister bottles and loving her"

Backyard camping
Backyard camping... I am not sure but I think the hose is there on purpose, in case the fancy fire got out of control....
Izzy joined us too for a bit, I brought her high chair outside and let her eat her dinner in front of the fire (note the fancy camping chairs we own), and then put her to sleep in her crib inside. We had to leave the screen door open though so I could hear her at night, luckily her room is near the backyard. Unfortunately although spring has sprung it still gets pretty cold at night and as a result the three backyard Lacroix's ended up sleeping pretty much in one big pile (or rather Evie slept, I am not sure how much sleep either Patrick or I got). Then at about 2 am the indoor Lacroix decided that it was too cold in her room too, because of the open door, and protested greatly. I went inside to take care of her and, I am sorry to say, was too much of a wuss... or maybe too smart... no really it was for the benefit of keeping Isadora warm... yup that is why :) and decided to stay inside for the rest of the night. Regardless of the temperature it was loads of fun, I think we'll have to camp in our backyard again soon... actually I am pretty sure Evie will beg us to do it again soon.....

International Day 2012
Last weekend was our third year hosting a Belgium booth for IST's International Day. Year one I learned not to make my waffles on the fly (it was such a disaster I even lost a waffle maker to the event), year two I learned that it was not necessary to make 100 waffles (people liked them but not that much) and this year I learned that if I want to make huge bucks on my Guess the Belgian "Thing" game I needed to use the chance to win a whole chocolate bar as an incentive and use Patrick and my barker.
I also learned that the only place in town to get Belgian chocolate is Trader Joe's... what is up with that? Oh well, at least it was cheap. It was Izzy's first International Day and she did a good job of helping us man the booth (and sleep, she slept through at least 1/2 of the ordeal). I also learned that key to big sales in waffles is to have whipped cream on hand... however two things of it was overkill. We still have whipped cream in the fridge, which I predict will still be there at this time next year ;P

Ya esta libre!
Big going ons in the Lacroix household.... Ya esta libre la muneca.... or so said Izzy's nanny on Monday. Translated: Now the doll (that's the pet name Borelys has for Izzy) is FREE. This freedom is also known as crawling and man did this kid get good at it quick. The first official day of real crawling was last Saturday (which was also Patrick's birthday). I say official because before that she was scooting along on her belly army style, which got her around alright but not nearly so efficiently as the full blown stomach off the floor moves she is sporting now. Being the smart babe she is, she varies her technique depending on the floor surface. On carpet it is a traditional arm, arm, leg, leg type crawl and on our tile floors it is more of a arm, arm, leg, thigh/butt drag crawl hybrid. Regardless of the method she is now a serious threat to any floor detritus, which means the age of vigilance in our house has now begun.
In other big news she also cut her first tooth at the end of last week. The little white wonder can now be seen by all (it is no longer a figment of my imagination) and doesn't seem to be giving her too much grief. She also has started sleeping for about 9 hours at a stretch most nights (thank goodness for small miracles). All of this has caused me to notice the subtle transition (or maybe not so subtle) between baby and toddler going on right in front of my eyes. With Genevieve I felt like I woke up one day and my baby was no longer a baby. With Izzy I am much more aware that the transition is coming (or really underway) and can see the change day to day. It is a little hard to be so aware that the baby-phase is coming to an end, but yet good because it allows me to all the more cherish each moment. In the spirit of cherishing (or at least recording for posterity) moments here is Izzy in her first feature-length home video "Friday Puff Hunting"

Punk Rock Girl
Isadora is 8 months old and is a punk rock girl. Her multitude of hair whorls and growing hair have resulting in a seriously awesome baby mohawk.... no gel required. Overall, month 7 to 8 was a good one, Izzy got to meet more of her family and take a trip to DC, she started sleeping for almost the whole night (and spends all night in her room and crib...yipeee), and became a solid sitter. She has a new favorite pastime: stealing Patrick's glasses, which involves her repeatedly stealing his glasses and Patrick smiling at her and saying "stiiinkeer!" This game never gets old and is played pretty much anytime Patrick is around, in fact she likes it so much she has started diving out of my arms to get to Patrick to play it. She has started to proto-crawl, aka pulling herself across the ground on her belly and can now get to a sit from laying down. She is much more of a solids than a liquids girl and is eating ever more complex things, even if there are no teeth yet in sight. Her favorite though is still good old oatmeal, which she eats with abandon. Oh and she also really likes to eat grass when/if she is ever given the chance.

Better Neck Festival
To motivate Genevieve to do her physical therapy exercises we told her that once her neck was "all better" we would throw her a Better Neck Party. Well last week she demonstrated that she could move her neck pretty much all around and hadn't needed medicine for over a week and so we proclaimed that it was time for the Better Neck Party. This also coincided with the weekend before my birthday so we decided it would be fun to couple the Better Neck Party with my birthday and it became a Better Neck Festival, otherwise known as the Renaissance Festival. A party isn't complete without friends so Evie brought her best friend Nanan too. The girls had a great time with all the princesses, "queens", tree people and dragons; ate some high quality renaissance junk food; held geese with diapers (that was a bit odd) and rode a few "rides". I think the highlight though was the crowns they picked up, both carefully chosen to match their outfits... what style!

Barney Brainwash
When I was in high school I had a thing against Barney. The friendly purple dinosaur was the object of some sort of strange teen angst. I even went so far as to have a Barney doll that a friend gave me tied up with a noose and hanging from the back of my 1957 Ford Country Sedan. (This odd behavior of mine should be remembered of course when the girls are teenagers...) I outgrew my open hostility to Barney roundabout sophomore year of college but have ever since then harbored a definite dislike.
Fast forward to mid-January and Evie's illness. While Evie was sick she watched an ungodly amount of television and 3/4ths of that television was Barney. I had no idea just how prolific the purple dinosaur was until we turned on netflix and saw the seemingly unending list of Barney adventures. Barney does A,B,C; Barney and his magic school bus; plain old Barney Imagines; Barney celebrates Valentines Day, Halloween, Christmas, Fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Lent; Barney builds a tree house; Barney eats a whole cake; Barney travels to Mongolia.... Day in and day out she watched, and I was subjected to, "I loove yoou, You loove meee" At first I cringed, then after about a week of Barney immersion therapy I found myself immune to it. Two weeks later I found myself singing Barney songs in the shower. And here we are today and I find myself thinking, hey Barney isn't so bad. Its all about music, imagination and friends, what could be better than that? Yes folks it took over a month but I have been totally utterly Barney Brainwashed. Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. golden sun, Please shine down on me. Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. golden sun, Please just let me be, Oh little children why do you, Love that purple dino so through and through. Oh Mr. Sun. Sun. Mr. golden sun. Please just let me be.
OK maybe not totally brainwashed....

Weekend in DC
Last weekend we took a quick (and very last minute) trip to DC to visit our nephews and Patrick's sister and Mom. There were some serious logistics involved with getting 4 kids under the age of 5 out and about but we still managed to do it (by god). There was only a little bit of child caging that had to be done:
Highlights included a good solid morning at the natural history museum where Evie saw dinosaur fossils for the first time, we all became engrossed in human evolution (ok maybe Evie wasn't too engrossed but she wasn't uninterested...and Izzy slept through it all) and I learned about some funky mammals I had never even heard of before.
We also visited the national gallery for just a quick walk though and took a carousel ride. (A favorite activity for both of the older Lacroix girls...)

The highlight though was taking Evie and Dylan ice skating. I am afraid I was about as wobbly as the kids were at first and wasn't too much help but after a few laps we were all doing pretty well. Evie even skated "by herself" with the help of the railing a bit. Genevieve took to it and managed to skate with us for almost an hour. It was pretty warm and thus just about the best ice skating I've ever done! More than anything else it was so very wonderful to see her doing so well!!
It was a great, but rather tiring trip for everyone....Sunday, February 12, 2012
Isadora at 7 Months!!
We missed a 6th month update for Izzy because of Evie's illness (and my school craziness) but rest assured our littlest Lacroix is growing (seemingly exponentially) and becoming ever more a cool little person. At seven months Izzy is a master sitter, a loquacious jabberer and still the biggest, cutest smiler I have ever met. Her sleep and routine were erratic prior to Evie's stint in the hospital but got much much worse during the experience, to the point where we decided drastic measures were necessary. As a result we have spent the past 1.5 weeks "sleep training" her, which has been a bit brutal but her sleep is much improved and she is doing all of it now in her crib (at the low she was sleeping with me and waking up every 2 hours so it is a big improvement!) Her favorite place to nap is in the ergo... really her favorite place period is probably in the ergo.... but she occasionally naps in her crib too.
She is a super solids eater and likes to eat peas and carrots, oatmeal, eggs, spinach and rice, pears, apples and most recently sweet potato puffs. The puffs are just about the best thing to happen to her (or really us) in the past few weeks because they keep her occupied while other food is made. She can now sit for 15 minutes or so at a stretch on the floor just playing with her toys (which is what she is doing right now) and makes all sorts of funny noises to narrate the toy-playing experience. Her favorite utterances right now are dadadadada and raspberries (is that an utterance?) Her favorite toys are a wooden fish that she likes to chew on and a colorful hexagonal rattle thingie (good description eh?) She also likes to jump in the jumper for short stints (I have it next to the piano and can generally get through one or maybe two pieces before she is finished with that activity) She is constantly in motion, particularly with her hands, which she moves around in tiny circles like a flamenco dancer. My favorite silly thing that she does is when you pick her up and she is really happy she opens her mouth reaalllly wide and tries to eat your face. This can be a particularly messy experience when it occurs just after a meal :)

Little by little
I am (as one might imagine) incredibly behind on just about everything so just a quick update.... Little by little Evie is feeling better. She seemed to "turn a corner" as they say on Tuesday and even decided to start sleeping in her own bed again. Although her range of motion with her head/neck still isn't great it is better than it was last week. She is finished with her antibiotics (hooray 5 less times each day we have to coax her to take something) and hasn't needed any codine for about 24 hours. She is down to just two pain meds, which makes me so happy. She even went into school for an hour yesterday and an hour today. Here is to hoping her recovery continues on this trajectory!

Recouperation
Evie has been home for a few days now and little by little is starting to feel better. She still cannot move her neck much but the pain seems to be subsiding a bit. She has her moments where she is like the Evie we all know and love (see picture above), which makes both Patrick and I feel so very happy. I think we are both coming to terms with the fact that it is not necessarily going to be a quick few days and then back to normal. Her doctor said that if she is still contorted this way by the beginning of February we'll need to take her to PT. In the meantime we are doing our own little bits of PT, we make her do a bit between her "shows" and she usually tries pretty hard to do the exercises the way we ask her to. We'll go for follow-up appointments with both the surgeon and infectious disease doctors early next week. At the hospital the ID doctor told us that there is a 50/50 chance we may never know what caused the abscess and her neck issues. I think I am coming to terms with that, honestly my only desire right now is for her to feel 100% better!

Going Home!
In the evening she had lots of visitors including my cousin, aunt and uncle and her teacher came by to visit. She made paper dolls with her cousin and reiceved some of her favorite books from school and a lovely card from her teacher. The love she has recieved, both in visits and in e-mails and thoughts, from everyone has been so very wonderful and I am so greatful to have so many people around us that care so very much about our little girl. The best news though of the past 24 hours occured as I was writing this little post, her doctor came in and told us that once she took her morning antibiotic we could go home!! Hooray!!

In search of Pinkie Pie
Yesterday (or was it Saturday... I am afraid the days are a bit blurry at this point) Genevieve decided that a "pinkie pie" doll would make her feel extra brave and help her take her medicine (She is on a combination of IV meds and oral meds, with the hope of moving her to oral meds so she can go home). Patrick, the local present shopper, went on a target run for said doll. As he wandered the aisles of target and consulted with a number of expert sources, aka little girls who just had that knowledgeable look about them, he discovered that there really was no such thing as a pinkie pie doll per se. There was, however, a my little pony named that but she wasn't the nice soft (and assuredly pink) princessy doll Evie was imagining. He came back empty handed and discovered that a pinkie pie was actually not a real doll but a doll that Evie had conjoured up and decided she wanted. Me though, with the power of google, managed to find a soft version of the pinkie pie pony. I showed this option to her and she immedietly agreed that this pinkie pie would certainly fit the bill. I then set about finding the doll. The problem was that we, thinking this was a usual doll that we, being the Luddites we are, have never hear of, had promised pinkie pie as a present today for all her hard work fighting the pain and taking her medicine. Alas Ms. Pinkie Pie is not a usual buy. Thankfully I was able to order it from the toy store and then could pick it up there when it arrived. I explained that Pinkie would be slightly delayed and Evie was very understanding....
Last night we had a really tough night. I left the hospital at 11 pm to go to my parents and take care of Izzy. Evie was uncomfortable when I left and doing worse with the pain than she had in a day or so. Her fevers still didn't seem to be comming back, high of about 100 deg, but her pain was. At 2 am Patrick called me and told me she was doing really badly and so my mom, Isadora and I jumped in the car and came to the hospital. The poor thing was again in very bad pain and trying so hard to still be nice, saying no thank you even when we asked her about pillows here or sitting there. This kid was clearly earning her Pinkie Pie.
One of the (many) things that has been eye-opening to me this past week is just how much medicine is a riddle solving game. Last night the riddle was why she was doing worse again after doing so much better. The best solution seemed to be that we had stopped the really strong ibuprofen so we managed to get that to her again by morning and she was (seemingly) instantly improved and was finally able to fall asleep. The fact that her neck was still contorted and the pain was not going away has had everyone very worried so this morning she was told again that she couldn't eat or drink and that they would do another CT scan in the afternoon. Unfortunetly the afternoon stretched into the evening but finally around 4 pm today she had a another scan. She is so uncomfortable that we had to sedate her to do the scan and impressed all of us with her good additude and ability to count to forty in french as the medicine kicked in. I didn't mention this before but having your child be sedated and then put under a big machine is an incredibly scary thing, the first time they let Patrick stand next to her with a radiation coat and I watched from the tech room. This time they made me leave and Patrick and my Mom stayed with her.
While another CT scan was very scary, the good news is they did not see anything on it, which means that her initial diagnosis was correct and we will just have to focus on reducing her pain and rehabilitating her neck (which has now been in a contorted position for a week). Needless to say I was thrilled to get the e-mail that Ms. Pinkie Pie was available for pick-up so I told Genevieve she would be on the way and went out right after the CT scan to retrieve her (and a few other toys... I just couldn't help myself) I must admit Ms. Pinkie Pie is decidedly the most ridiculous toy I have bought yet for Evie... a pink pony that talks and you can teach to walk, but I tell ya what if it makes her feel even just a little bit better I am all for it! Ohh and I think we may need to do a garage sale after this whole experience because by god her toy supply must be doubled by this point :)

Our brave little girl
It has been a difficult week for everyone, but most especially the bravest of all of us, the not so little anymore Genevieve. As I write this right now she is peacefully asleep next to me and it makes my heart so happy to see her getting better. Having told this story now seemingly a hundred times to all the doctors I'll tell it one more time here for posterity sake...
Sunday night Evie complained of a sore throat as she went to bed. (She by the way had just had a very exciting evening out with Patrick and went to see Tin Tin in 3D) On Monday morning she woke up still with a sore throat but seemed OK to go to school. She was very tired all day and stayed so through the evening but couldn't sleep hardly at all. On Tuesday my mom took care of her for us because she seemed too sick for school. During the day she started to hold her head funny and complained of pain in her neck. The pain got worse and worse, to the point where she was complaining about bumps in the road. It didn't seem to be getting better so Patrick took her to the ER on Tuesday night (and was therefore up all night with her again) and they diagnosed her with toriculous (basically a spasmed neck) The next morning she wasn't feeling better and had a fever so I took her to her pediatrician's office where her doc suspected there was something more than just a spasm going on and decided to check her into the hospital. So around 11 am on Wednesday we were checked in and the long series of pokes, prods and check outs began for Evie.
They needed to put her on an IV and draw blood so a special person that is here just to help her feel better explained the process and then told her if she was really brave she would get her a barbie. If braveness is measured in barbies Evie must be one heck of a brave girl because she now has 5 of them and a barbie mini cooper to boot. Throughout all of the first day she was as good natured as can be even though she was clearly in a lot of pain. On Wednesday night they decided to do a CT scan, which was very scary for both Patrick and I, to try to figure out what was causing the neck position and the pain. In the end they found an abscess in the back of her throat and the decision was made for her to have surgery to drain it on Thursday. She was so very brave as we wheeled her down the halls and through the hospital in her bed to the OR. I think saying goodbye to her as they took her in for surgery was one of the scariest things I have ever done.
Surgery went well but (and we didn't find this out until later) the surgeon had to dig around a fair amount in her throat trying to get all of the abscess. This made it so that she was in even worse pain than before come Friday. It was made all the more difficult because on Thursday night they had to replace her IV twice. By Thursday night we had a routine down. I stayed with Evie during the day usually with my Mom or for awhile with my aunt Lisa and then we all hung out together in the afternoon and evening and then I went over to my parent's house to care for Izzy and Patrick stayed to keep her happy and comfortable at night, then around 6 am I would come back and we would start all over again. On Friday we had so much trouble with the pain and she was just miserable, it was so very hard to watch and so very frustrating because all I wanted to do was to make the pain go away. Mom was taking care of Izzy so I was all by myself during some of the worst of the pain and it made me realize just how important it was to have other family around too. All day Friday she was also spiking fevers so there started to be some concern that in fact there was something else going on instead of or aside from the abscess.
Because the fevers weren't going away we had first an infectious disease doctor and then a cardiologist come to see her on Saturday. They thought maybe she had something called kawasaki's disease... They did an ecocardiogram of her heart and found everything to be ok and at around noon yesterday she stopped spiking fevers, which was a really good sign. As of today her fevers are down and her pain seems to be improving somewhat and she can move her neck a little so they are now thinking that there isn't anything else wrong with her, thank goodness.
The whole experience has been such a strange and scary time warp. I think though scary experiences have a lot to teach us. From my standpoint it has made me acutely aware of just how lucky I am to have such an amazing husband in Patrick, he is the most loving and thoughtful father a kid could ever ask for (and he even remembers to bring me exactly the coffee I love when he goes out). I am also so lucky to have a mother who is not only caring but so very knowledgeable and without whom I think this whole experience would not have been scary but terrifying. More than anything the past few days have made me appreciate Genevieve, she is such a wonderful little light in this world and is so very brave and has such a great attitude even despite the pain and the pokes and the prods. Hopefully she will continue to feel better and we will get her back home soon. As funny as it sounds I am looking forward to the normal and mundane more than I ever thought I would....
